Owaisi questions 1993 blast convict Yakub Memon's hanging

Описание: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has stoked fresh controversy by raising questions over 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon's expected hanging. Owaisi has said that Memon, who is likely to be hanged on July 30, is being punished because of his religion. He has accused the Centre of indulging in religious discrimination and said the government should execute all death row convicts. Owaisi said killers of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and Punjab chief minister Beant Singh are not being executed because of political pressure. In 2013, Supreme Court upheld Memon's 2006 conviction by special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) Judge P D Kode in Mumbai. The apex court observed that Yakub, a chartered accountant—and the most articulate and literate among all convicts—played a "key'' role in the blasts. Yakub is the younger brother of Tiger Memon, who along with Dawood Ibrahim masterminded the blasts and are absconding. Yakub has been in custody since 1994. The serial blasts in March 1993 had left 257 dead and over 700 injured. Yakub Memon is the only convict whose death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court. President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected his mercy petition in May 2014.
