Dr. Michael White, who
had worked with the Hot 8 after Hurricane Katrina on a
repertoire of traditional songs that they then recorded for
a Smithsonian Folkways album, performed a short piece on
clarinet that he wrote for the service. A short film of his
eulogy, Bennie Pete: A Noble Life, is included in this unit.
While the Hot 8 has a reputation as a young, innovative band
and Michael White is known more as a traditionalist, they had
teamed up years before on a repertoire of traditional songs
that they then recorded for a Smithsonian Folkways album.
Though younger musicians and their elders do not always see
eye to eye, it is fair to say that New Orleans music in the 21st
century is a glorious conversation between past and present
approaches to performing, which can also be seen during the
film of Bennie’s jazz funeral, A Collective Love, when hundreds
of musicians from all over the city performed together in
honor of his life.
