US Army Rangers - Battle of Mogadishu, 1993
"They came for a 30-minute snatch-and-grab. They fought for 18 hours. Nobody was left behind."
STORY: October 1993. Army Rangers and Delta Force raided a building in Mogadishu to capture Somali warlord lieutenants. Intelligence said it would take 30 minutes. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down. Suddenly, Rangers were fighting through a city of one million hostile Somalis. Chalk Four, led by Sergeant First Class Matt Eversmann, fought their way to the first crash site, establishing a perimeter against waves of militia. For 18 hours, they held that position. Ammunition ran low. Casualties mounted. Rangers shared water, magazines, and medical supplies. When Somalis overran one position, Rangers counter-attacked with bayonets. A Ranger injured by grenades continued directing fire from the ground. Another made eleven runs through enemy fire to rescue wounded. At dawn, a relief convoy finally broke through. Every Ranger walked or was carried out. Eighteen Americans died, but no one was abandoned. "Rangers Lead The Way" became more than a motto that night.
