The scale measures up to 400 pounds and I measured my own weight to make sure it was calibrated within reason. But since I had no idea how much each hull would weigh, I first weighed each end separately. The two weights were 111 pounds and 159 pounds. So I knew that the total weight would not exceed 300 pounds and that the entire hull could be weighed at once. The total weight came to 285 pounds. Or about 130 kg.
The hull is almost exactly 20 feet long and the balance point was 117 inches from the bow. This is just 3 inches forward of the exact middle of the hull. A lot can change with the final construction but I like that the balance point is currently at almost the center of the hull.
The original plans say that the complete sailboat will weigh 280 kg empty and can hold another 300 kg of weight. That would be 617 pounds empty with an ability to carry another 660 pounds. That would put the max weight at about 1,277 pounds. But I've modified the design by making the boat longer, wider, and taller. I've also increased the construction weight significantly with the extra thickness of the hulls under the waterline. To compensate for the extra weight, I also widened the hulls by about 3 inches.
How does this compare with the planned weight? The boat is already at 570 pounds or 260 kg. And we still have the bridge deck, cabin, mast, engine, etc. Plus the hulls still need their outer fiberglass. I wouldn't be surprised if the final weight is about 1,200 pounds or 540 kg. So this boat will likely have an empty weight almost equal to the fully loaded original weight. Does that mean it can't carry anything extra? No, because the modified boat is longer and wider than the original and displaces more water.
This sailboat should displace about 2,300 pounds of water at the designed waterline and if my estimate of the final build weight is accurate, then it should be able to carry another 1,100 pounds or 500 kg. That should be enough to handle people and supplies and even some water holding tanks.
Make sure to always read and follow all safety instructions for any equipment, tools, or materials that you use. It doesn't matter if they are electric or hand powered. And wear proper safety and protective gear, especially for your eyes, ears, and hands. Maintain a clean and orderly work environment and never get in a hurry or do any work when you are not feeling well. Be careful of heavy lifting or awkward situations. Finally, use common sense. These are not all the guidelines you should follow. They are just common advice that will help prevent injury. If you are unsure or uncomfortable, stop and ask for help.
