Director Roger Avary is opening up about the final conversation he shared with James Van Der Beek — a moment he now describes as deeply meaningful and unforgettable.
Avary, who directed Van Der Beek in the 2002 film The Rules of Attraction, reflected on their last phone call shortly before the actor was hospitalized. He revealed that he felt fortunate to have spoken with James one final time before he faced what he called “eternity.” The conversation, he said, was less about career and more about life itself.
Van Der Beek passed away on February 11 at the age of 48, three years after being diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer. As Avary recalled their final exchange, he described it as largely philosophical — a discussion that moved beyond film and fame into deeper reflections about existence, purpose, and love.
