When Andra Day’s 2015 song “Rise Up” emerged, it quickly became a protest anthem for the Black Lives Matter movement. When asked about her thoughts on an artist’s responsibility to speak to social justice issues, Day said artists do have a responsibility, “but it’s not because we’re artists.”
“I just think we’re human, and I think — for me and my belief system — at the core of that is service,” she told the PBS NewsHour’s Jeffrey Brown. “It’s the right thing to do, I believe. It’s beyond being an artist. It’s a duty to each other.”
