In this wide-ranging conversation Rob and the authors talk about the biggest challenges facing college students and their parents. They also discuss the five markers of adulthood—completing education, obtaining a job and settling into a career, living independently, finding a partner, and becoming a parent—were defined by sociologists in the 1950s. Despite social and economic conditions changing drastically between then and now, twentysomethings are still judged on their success (or failure) in checking these off by the time they reach their 30s. Hibbs and Rostain argue these markers are long past their expiration date. They explain the cultural shifts and unprecedented societal forces that parents and young adults face today in order to help them embrace a new normal.

Hibbs and Rostain offer practical and actionable advice on how parents and young adults can improve their relationships by learning new, more effective ways of communicating. The new normal of parent- child relationship asks us to rethink our “shoulds,” and in the process develop a closer relationship based on talking and listening to understand each other, rather than “being right.” You’re Not Done Yet addresses the common and challenging problems that arise when mental illness creates a drag on a young adult’s progress, and shows how parents may be engaged in the treatment process.

B. Janet Hibbs, M.F.T., Ph.D. has held faculty positions for more than 15 years in graduate programs for psychologists and marital and family therapists. She is the author of Try to See It My Way: Being Fair in Love and Marriage and the co-author of The Stressed Years of Their Lives with Anthony Rostain.

Anthony Rostain, M.D., M.A., is a nationally-recognized expert in child and adolescent psychiatry, Chair and Chief of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Cooper University Health Care, and Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at Cooper University Medical School of Rowan University. He’s the co-author of The Stressed Years of Their Lives with B. Janet Hibbs.
