Bipolar Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure used to treat men with an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The procedure is performed by a urologist and involves the use of a resectoscope, a specialized instrument that allows the surgeon to remove excess prostate tissue through the urethra.
It is a safer and more efficient alternative to traditional TURP. During the procedure, the patient will be given general anaesthesia and a catheter will be inserted into the urethra to help drain urine. The resectoscope, which has a small loop on the end, will then be inserted into the urethra and used to remove the excess prostate tissue. The procedure typically takes between 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the size of the prostate.
Recovery time for Bipolar TURP is usually faster than traditional TURP, patients can typically return to normal activities within a week or two. However, some patients may experience side effects such as bleeding, infection, or difficulty urinating.
Bipolar TURP is a highly effective treatment for BPH and can significantly improve symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, and weak urine flow. It can also help to prevent complications such as urinary tract infections and kidney damages.
