4. Monitoring Activities - What isn’t reviewed isn’t controlled.

• Enron, once the darling of Wall Street, built on manipulated profits and hidden debt. When the truth came out, it wasn’t just the company that fell — it was investor confidence across the market.
• Satyam, often called India’s Enron, where the chairman personally inflated numbers with fake invoices and bank statements. Billions were wiped out overnight.
• Wells Fargo, where a culture of aggressive sales targets led to thousands of fake accounts. No one questioned the numbers until it was too late.
• Walmart, whose global ambitions stumbled over bribery scandals in Mexico, Brazil, China, and India — all because compliance took a back seat.

In each case, it wasn’t just a rogue employee or a one-off mistake. It was a failure of the system. Internal controls were ignored, bypassed, or overridden.

🎯 So, what does a strong internal control system really look like?
• Governance that starts at the top.
• Segregation of duties so no single person has too much control.
• Regular reviews and independent checks.
• And now, even AI and analytics to detect anomalies faster than humans ever could.

Fraud rarely happens in a flash. It builds in the silence of unchecked moments. But when internal controls are strong, they close the doors before anyone can sneak through.
