Join us for a fascinating conversation as Clarke Historical Museum Registrar Alex Cox sits down with Chuck Petty, a lifelong Humboldt County resident with deep ties to our community's history. Chuck was born at General Hospital in Eureka on January 27, 1961, and grew up in Cutten, attending local schools before earning a degree in Biology from Humboldt State University.
With family roots tracing back to Finland, Chuck’s maternal grandparents settled in Humboldt County in the early 1900s, and his first home was on their farm—where Murphy’s Market now stands in Cutten. For over 40 years, Chuck dedicated his career to St. Joseph Hospital’s Clinical Laboratory and Pathology departments, retiring as the Pathology and Phlebotomy Manager in 2022.
Chuck’s passion for local history began in his youth, inspired by family friends Arvis and Weldon Turner, and has grown into a lifetime of service to the preservation of Humboldt County's heritage. He has been actively involved with the Eureka Heritage Society since 1992, serving as both a board member and president, and has contributed to the Clarke Historical Museum since the early 1990s. Currently, he serves on the board of the Humboldt County Historical Society, a role he’s held for the past six years.
Married to Wendy L. Petty since 1982, Chuck has also channeled his love for history into restoring several historic properties in Humboldt County, including their own 1909 home in Eureka, once owned by early Eureka mayor Oscar Lord.
