The Battle of Plei Me: The Forgotten Siege That Triggered the Ia Drang Campaign—October 19-25, 1965. Six thousand North Vietnamese Army soldiers surround a remote Special Forces camp in the Central Highlands, attacking in waves for six days and nights. Twelve Green Berets and four hundred Montagnard fighters are outnumbered fifteen to one.
The defenders call in air strikes, fire artillery, and fight desperate hand-to-hand combat along the wire. A relief column is sent but gets ambushed on the road and pinned down for days. The camp nearly falls multiple times, but American air power—dropping napalm, bombs, and rockets—saves the defenders. After six days, the siege is broken, but the North Vietnamese retreat westward toward the Ia Drang Valley.
American commanders decide to pursue and destroy them. The First Cavalry Division air-assaults into Landing Zone X-Ray in mid-November, and the first major battle between the US Army and North Vietnamese Army begins—the legendary battle immortalized in "We Were Soldiers." But it all started at Plei Me. This is the forgotten siege that set the stage for Ia Drang, the battle that proved the North Vietnamese would mass forces and fight conventionally, and the desperate six-day defense that became a testament to courage against impossible odds.
