Autumn came to the forest suddenly. Just yesterday the air was warm and dry — and now, dark clouds, cold wind, and rain falling since dawn. That’s when I realized it was time to do what I’d been putting off — build a real, solid roof for my shelter.
My hideout stands on a fallen tree. Its thick, strong trunk serves as a natural beam, the foundation of my entire shelter. What was once a simple refuge had to become something more — a true forest home. After days of rain, I needed to make it warm, dry, and durable.
I began by preparing the logs — choosing sturdy but manageable ones that could bear the weight of a full roof. I cleaned each log, burned one side over the fire to protect it from moisture, and laid them like shingles. Between the layers, I sealed every gap with clay mixed with straw and pressed in moss for extra insulation — a natural, living material that keeps warmth and resists water.
The roof became double-sloped — the main section plus a side extension that now serves as a small storage space for tools and supplies. This wasn’t just construction — it was creation. Every nail, every bit of clay felt like a step toward something real, something alive — a bond with the wild world around me.
When the roof was finally done, the rain returned stronger than before. But this time, I was safe. Inside was dry and warm. Raindrops hit the burned logs while I sat near the fire, listening to the crackle of wood and feeling the heat flow through the air.
Later, I went fishing by the river — the water had risen after the storms, and the fish were active. I caught a pike — strong, wild, and fresh. On my way back, I found mushrooms growing near the shelter — a gift from the forest after the rain. And that evening, I cooked pike with forest mushrooms over the coals.
The smell — a mix of smoke, fish, fire, and damp moss — can’t be described. It’s the scent of real life. No city noise, no rush. Just me, my dog, and the endless whisper of the forest.
Here, time slows down. You begin to appreciate simple things — the warmth of fire, the sound of rain on the roof, the glimmer of flame on wet clay.
And that’s when you realize — nature heals better than any therapy.
Three days deep in the wild forest, alone but not lonely — just working with my hands, feeling harmony, and living simply.
My roof survived the first heavy rain — and I survived the first real test of autumn. 🌧️🔥
