For months, Rhea Holmes slept on her husband’s grave at Oakwood Cemetery after being evicted from her Syracuse home.
From May to mid-December, she quietly lived at the cemetery, sleeping under a tarp atop his grave. She would sneak in in the evenings. She sometimes used bathrooms at nearby Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry to clean up.
Holmes said she didn’t tell people she was homeless. Officer James Pastorello knew Holmes because a few days earlier on a cold winter day he gave her a ride to the cemetery, believing he was helping a woman visit loved ones. He didn’t know she was living there.
