Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate that impatience will usually lead to bad things.
Description: The children will take a test with ten instructions. They will be told to follow all the instructions on the paper quickly. If they don't follow the instructions exactly, they will have to do a bunch of silly actions.
Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this help sheet, and a "Patience Test Lesson 4" from the Lesson Materials CD Rom for each child in your group. (There are four versions with instructions 2-9 in different order.)
To introduce this activity, say the following:
1. Today we are going to take a test.
2. Don't get worried, this test only has ten instructions.
3. Listen carefully. You must complete each instruction before you can move on to
the next thing.
4. The instructions are in different orders, so don't worry if others are doing something
different than you are.
5. I will be timing you, so I want you to get done as quickly as you can.
For detailed instructions on how to do the activity see the DVD.
Note: Most kids will be impatient and will start to do the instructions without reading all the way to number ten. Don't give away that they are messing up. Encourage them in what they are doing.
During the activity, say the following:
1. There are some pretty silly instructions on this test aren't there?
2. Wow, I didn't know you had such a great singing voice.
3. That is the best chicken dance I have ever seen!
Note: Continue with similar statements until all the kids have gotten to the last instruction. Kids who read the instructions properly should be standing up on the test at the end. Those who didn't will be instructed to sit down with their paper on their head.
After the activity, say the following:
1. If you are standing up, you followed the instructions perfectly.
2. What did you think about those who weren't following the instructions? (It was funny,
they looked silly.)
3. Those of you who are sitting might have felt silly when you realized that you wouldn't
have had to do all those crazy things if you had followed the directions.
4. Impatience not only makes us look bad to others, it never helps us get what we want.
5. Impatience leads to all kinds of things we don't want: our friends being embarrassed
with us, punishments from our parents, no one wanting to be around us because we
whine and complain all the time.
Summary: Just like on this test, when you are impatient, you will always end up with a bad result.
Patience Test
1. Read all the instructions on this paper.
2. Stand up and howl like a wolf.
3. Recite the alphabet at the top of your voice.
4. Dance the "Chicken Dance" until the teacher tells you to stop.
5. Roll back and forth on the ground and chant, "I am a bean burrito! I am a bean burrito!"
6. Yell "Nacho Cheese" ten times.
7. Do an imitation of your favorite animated character.
8. Hop on one foot and rub your belly while singing "I'm a little teapot" as loud as you can.
9. Make crazy monkey sounds and wave your arms like a monkey.
10. If you acted out any of the previous instructions, sit down and balance this paper on your head.
If you read the entire paper first, Congratulations!!! Do not follow any of the instructions listed
above. Put the paper on the ground and stand on it. Don't tell the others what to do, just enjoy
watching them be silly.
