Today on Pillow Talk with Dr Boyce and Dr Alicia Watkins, we discuss “Eat the Rich,” a Netflix documentary about the meme stock craze, Robinhood, market manipulation and more.
Dr Alicia Watkins is a licensed therapist and full professor of Social Work. Dr Boyce Watkins has a PhD in Finance.
Eat the Rich really covers quite a few problematic elements of the meme stock craze, most of which began during the year 2020. In the midst of the pandemic, depressed people stuck in their homes were convinced to download the Robinhood app and trade stocks as if they were inside a casino.
This came with a long list of complications, as men like Financial Influencer Roaring Kitty were able to convince unsuspecting 22 year olds to pump up the price of GameStop Stock until it was 500 times worth its intrinsic value. Was this unethical? I think that it was.
The craze with meme stocks was one of the reasons for heightened stock market volatility during the year 2022. Dr Boyce and Alicia can break it down from both a finacial and psychological standpoint. The ticker symbol for GameStop Stock is GME. Bitcoin (BTC) and other assets were also impacted by the Short Squeeze craze, including AMC stock, so this meme stock craze pushed assets across the boarding, creating a new class of investments that defy the tenants of financial theory.
To find more stocks to buy now, you can check cnbc, yahoo finance and other publications.
