Her doctoral work focuses on improving the early detection of viral non-suppression (virological failure) in Uganda, applicable to other resource-limited settings. While access to antiretroviral treatment has expanded globally, many people still experience viral non-suppression. When treatment stops working effectively, it can lead to drug resistance and limit drug options.

Maria’s research asks an urgent question:
How can we identify people at risk of treatment failure earlier — especially in health systems with limited staff, funding and monitoring tools?

In conversation with Sumana Dhanani, founder of The African Researcher and also Project Coordinator of the Mental Health and Behaviour Research Group at the University of Rwanda CMHS, Maria reflects on what it truly means to conduct impactful research within African health systems.
