INTACH Conservation Institute Lecture Series 'Conservation Insights 2020’ was delivered on11th December at 1730 IST via Zoom
Speaker: Tammy Hong (Andrew W. Mellon Artists’ Materials Intern, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, USA)
The title of the talk: Fluid Materialities: Chinese Ink Sticks (墨) Reinterpreted in Nineteenth-Century Britain
This lecture is based on exploratory research that investigates the intersections of Chinese and European ink traditions. Tucked away in the treasure trove of collection items in the Art Materials Research and Study Centre at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. is a nineteenth-century colour box from the well-known British artists’ supplier Charles Roberson & Co. The box included ten colour cakes embossed with the Roberson emblem, six brushes, a ceramic china tile, and a Chinese ink stick - a combination of artists’ materials representing a fusion of East Asian and European art practices. Nineteenth-century British colourmen catalogues and instruction manuals advertised Chinese ink sticks on the British market as “Indian Ink.” The speaker will discuss the aspects of carbon black materialities and the historical factors that contributed to the reconceptualization of Chinese ink sticks as “Indian Ink” in nineteenth-century Britain.
