Hello everyone! In this lecture, I am Going to provide solution to one of the questions of JEE advanced 2011. This question is from the chapter HYDROCARBONS. This question is created by combining concept of halogenation, structural isomerism and stereoisomers.
This question is about counting of stereoisomers on monochlorination of a given alkane. This question has wide scope of discussing questions related to stereoisomers. Monochlorination of alkane can take place when an alkane is treated with halogen in presence of sunlight. This reaction follows Free radical substitution mechanism. various products may be possible. Some of the products may have chiral centers present in them and give rise to stereochemistry. If a molecule has only one chiral center, then two enantiaomers are possible about this one chiral center.
If a molecule has 2 identical chiral centers then it will have total three stereoisomers - 2 of which are enantiomers and one is mesomer. One mesomer and enantiomers are diastereoisomers of each other. This is how questions on stereoisomers are created. However if a molecule has 2 non-identical chiral centers, then there will be a total of four stereoisomers.
In general, if a molecule contains ‘n’ number of chiral centers, then maximum number of stereoisomers will be 2 to the power n. Please note: This need not to be the exact number of stereoisomers but maximum number. Since there may be some molecules which might be repeated depending on whether the chiral centers are identical or not.
