Tuta absoluta, commonly known as the tomato leaf miner, is a destructive pest that affects tomato crops throughout the growing season. Due to its rapid reproductive cycle—up to 12 generations per year—it can cause severe yield losses if not detected early.

✅ Key Symptoms:
Irregular grayish-white tunnels (mines) on young leaves
Necrosis of affected leaf tissue
Larvae boring into stems, causing holes and weakening plant growth
Black entry or exit marks on fruits
Secondary infections leading to fruit rot
Slowed plant development
✅ Pest Characteristics:
Eggs: Cream-colored, laid on the underside of leaves
Larvae: Pale green with a distinctive black band behind the head
Adults: Silvery-brown moths, 5–7 mm long
Optimal development conditions: 26–30°C and 60–75% relative humidity
✅ Natural and Biological Control:
Beneficial predators such as Trichogramma pretiosum, Nesidiocoris tenuis, and Macrolophus pygmaeus
Entomopathogenic fungi like Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae
Neem seed extract, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), and Spinosad
✅ Chemical Control (When Necessary):

To prevent resistance, rotate insecticides such as indoxacarb, abamectin, azadirachtin, and fenoxycarb + lufenuron, following local agricultural regulations.

✅ Preventive Measures:
Use pest-free transplants
Install pheromone or sticky traps for monitoring
Remove and destroy infested plant parts
Control alternative host plants
Practice crop rotation and proper field sanitation
Solarize soil or use plastic mulch
Wait at least six weeks before replanting
