Shanghai's "Two Sessions" through foreign eyes

Описание: Shanghai's annual "Two Sessions" (annual sessions of the city's legislature and political advisory body) are one of the city's most important political events because these meetings recap the previous year and set the city's agenda for the year ahead. But inside the opening sessions, some of the audience weren't Chinese.

Foreign residents, including consular representatives and professionals recognized for their long-term contributions to Shanghai, were invited to observe the proceedings up close. Some were attending for the first time, others were returning for a second year.

For many, like Simon Lichtenberg, founder and CEO of the Trayton Group and a decades-long Shanghai resident, it was a novel perspective. "I'm quite familiar with the process, but it's my first time to participate in the opening ceremony," he shared. "Even after so many years, I learned new things today."

This act of observation is intentional. While these international guests do not vote or submit formal proposals, their presence is a bridge. The goal is exposure and understanding, offering a clear window into how Shanghai's priorities are debated and set, from technological innovation and green development to healthcare reform and cultural strategy. They then carry these insights back into their own professional and personal networks, fostering a deeper, more informed dialogue between the city and its global community.
