Restoring the Tag on a Vintage Shoe Last | Handmade 1930s Tool

This wooden shoe last is another piece from my grandfather’s workshop. According to family information, it may date back to the 1930s, and like the others in this series, it was handmade by my grandfather.

At the beginning of this video, I show the last and its metal identification tag.

I start by trying to secure the tag with a nail. But while hammering it in, I realize the nail hasn’t gone in properly. The tag comes loose in my hand.

So I try again.

I attempt to hold it in place without fully fixing it, but once I drive three nails into the front area, the tag comes loose again.

Finally, I secure it properly by placing a nail from the back side of the tag, fixing it firmly to the last.

You can also see that the mouth of the last was repaired with sheet metal many years ago. Old shoemakers often repaired their tools instead of replacing them.

This last is another handmade masterpiece created by my grandfather.

If I can find a sponsor, I would love to professionally restore this vintage shoe last and document the entire restoration process in a future video.

After the lasting experiment is complete, I show the final shape on the last, and then remove the nails again so the upper can be used for the next test in the series.

This video is part of my ongoing vintage shoe last experiment series, where I test the same shirt-made loafer upper on different lasts from my grandfather’s collection.
