Treaty 8 chiefs escalate fight against Alberta separatist referendum

Описание: Treaty 8 chiefs are demanding Premier Danielle Smith end Alberta's separation push, arguing First Nations have not consented to any referendum process.

Grand Chief Trevor Mercredi said "Our treaties are not a myth.

They're foundational documents, they're sacred, they're protected legally," as leaders vowed to continue fighting October's referendum question.

Another chief accused the Alberta government of creating "a constitutional crisis" and called for the debate to end.

The province maintains the referendum question does not trigger a duty to consult. Erik Bay reports.
