Isaiah 49 presents the Servant of the Lord speaking about His divine calling from the womb. He is chosen to restore Israel and also to be “a light to the Gentiles,” bringing salvation “unto the end of the earth.” Though the Servant experiences discouragement, feeling His labor has been in vain, He trusts that His judgment and reward are with the Lord.

God promises that the Servant’s mission is greater than restoring Israel alone—He will gather the scattered people and extend salvation to all nations. The Lord assures Zion that He has not forgotten her, declaring, “I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.” Even when Zion feels forsaken, God affirms His everlasting compassion.

The chapter continues with promises of restoration: captives will be freed, the hungry will be fed, and the Lord will guide and comfort His people. Nations and kings will acknowledge Israel’s God. The chapter closes with God declaring His power to save, even from mighty oppressors, affirming that all flesh shall know He is the Lord, Savior, and Redeemer.

The purpose of Isaiah 49 is to reveal the Messiah’s mission as both Redeemer of Israel and Savior of the Gentiles. It reassures God’s people that He has not forgotten them despite hardship and exile. The chapter emphasizes God’s faithfulness to His covenant, His compassion for His people, and His sovereign power to accomplish salvation for all nations through His chosen Servant.
