Mo’ōlelo Mele: This mele draws a playful comparison between the proud strut of a rooster and the earnest efforts of a boy from Lā‘ie as he pursues the affection of a young woman from Waimānalo. Just as the rooster crows, dances, and shows off in hopes of winning over a hen, the boy charms and courts the girl with confidence and flair. In the end, she is moved by his persistence, and their flirtation blossoms into love. The composer found inspiration in the daily antics of her own roosters and hens, using their lively behavior to shape both the lyrics and choreography of this mele.
What makes this mele so special is that Kainoa is not only dancing about the chickens that he personally knows so well, but he is also dancing about the love story of his own parents. ❤️
