This is DAY ONE, and I already love this place!

Darjeeling, often called the “Queen of the Hills,” is a beautiful hill station in the Indian state of West Bengal, located in the lower Himalayas. Known for its scenic landscapes, world-famous Darjeeling tea, and the historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train), it attracts travelers from all over the world. The town sits at an altitude of about 6,700 feet and offers views of the majestic Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world.

The region has a rich cultural blend of Nepali (Gorkha), Lepcha, Bhutia, and Bengali communities. Over time, the Nepali-speaking people, mainly of Gorkha origin, began demanding a separate state—Gorkhaland—to preserve their cultural identity and gain administrative recognition. The Gorkhaland movement began in the 1980s, led by the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), and has seen several waves of protests since then.

While Gorkhaland is not yet a separate state, a semi-autonomous body called the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) was formed to govern the area. The demand remains strong among locals, who continue to campaign peacefully for their rights and identity.

Together, Darjeeling and the Gorkhaland region represent a unique mix of natural beauty, cultural richness, and ongoing political history.
