2011 was a bad year in movies if you compare it to 2010. While there were some great films, there wasn't one that I could say was truly a masterpiece like I could in 2010. Here is my top 10 of the year and a quick review of each of them.
10. Source Code
Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan star in this wonderfully crafted and well thought out science fiction thriller. This movie really brought me back to the wonderful sci-fi movies of the 70's as it did have a similar feel to it.
9. Super 8
Ah, J.J Abrams' ode to Spielberg. It's as exciting as it is gripping and emotional, like my no.10 this also reminded me of some classic summer blockbusters, while being original at the same time.
8. Moneyball
Usually in sports movies, you don't have to be a fan of the sport in question to enjoy the movie. This is half true for Moneyball. While It was an amazing story and entertained me throughout, there where some moments that I didn't quite understand fully since I'm not a fan of baseball.
7. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Just a great action movie. Ghost Protocol takes the stuff that worked from Mission Impossible 3 and removes the bad stuff which gives us a great popcorn flick that doesn't have a dull moment.
6. Thor
I'll admit I was a bit skeptical at a Thor movie. The character always seemed a bit wacky to me. But it turned out to be my favorite Avenger movie. Amazing performances from a stellar cast, a great villain in Loki and themes such as family, betrayal and love which this movie executed perfectly.
5. Drive
This movie was a breath of fresh air. It was so unique and artistic and Ryan Gosling's performance as the unnamed main character was subtle yet intense. Gosling has a very bright future ahead of him.
4. X-Men: First Class
I love the X-Men franchise, and I really wanted this movie to be good after the bombs that were X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. First Class exceeded my hopes and expectations and became my favorite movie of the franchise. I hope we see an X-Men: First Class 2 sometime in the future.
3. 50/50
Who would of thought that a cancer comedy would be the funniest and most heartfelt movie of the year? Joseph Gordon Levitt just keeps getting better and better, and 50/50 is no exception.
2. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
I originally didn't plan on seeing this movie because I thought it would be horrendous, but it took me completely by surprise and ended up being one of my favorite movies of the year. Andy Serkis should get more recognition for his motion capture work, it really is amazing.
1. Warrior
The best MMA movie ever made.
