This is an excerpt from a presentation given at the Halifax Bitcoin Meetup.
Errata:
I mistakenly said the witness is taken outside of the transaction. I mean to say, it is taken outside of the utxo input block, and appended to the transaction.
The segwit graphic makes it look like the witness is not a part of the block. It actually is, and is appended to the block, which allows the block to grow larger than 1MB.
