Javier Calvo once told us that translators are like ghosts: they are usually almost omnipresent, but they are always hidden.
That has often been the image of the ideal translator: the more invisible, the better. But, in reality, is this so? Three translators with extensive experience will lead this table. Calvo and Navarro translate mainly from English, the former into Spanish and the latter into Basque, while Ochoa de Eribe translates from Romanian into Spanish. All literary translators, regardless of their source or target language, have to face some fundamental questions in their work, such as: what is the meaning to be translated? How can I retain it without betraying the original? How can I capture the original meaning without over restricting the language? In fact, literary translation is not a simple change of code, but rather serves as a bridge between different cultures, forms and literatures. Without it, it would be difficult to understand the history of literature, and literature itself.
