The aim of this project is implementing a low-cost real-time control system for an atomic physics experiment (with a resolution of about 10ns). Essentially, the controller should create a sequence of digital pulses (and possibly analog ramps) with variable timing triggered by an external pulse or an internal clock. The market of such control systems includes rather expensive modules often using proprietary software. Low-cost microprocessors, on the other hand, are too slow and not really "real-time". SoCs with an fpga and programmable using free/opens-source tools/languages are the way to go.
This video gives a walk-through on how to get started with custom programming of a pynq board with a xilinx fpga (in this case a pynq-z1, but it should work with any other pynq board, too). In this example, a pulse generator with variable period and width is running on the fpga driving one of the LEDs on the pynq board.
