Wuhan is known for a reputation it didn't choose. But instead of headlines, I am chasing mornings.
I am starting with something that the city truly owns: breakfast, or as locals say, "过早“ (_guò zǎo_).
Greasy, noisy, relentless. Noodles tossed and slurped mid-stride, fried dough wrapped tight in sticky rice, carbs colliding in ways only Wuhan could imagine, fueling the city already — and always — in motion.
Locals here greet each other with, "_过早了没_” ("Had breakfast yet?"). A conversation starter no doubt, but also much more beyond small talk.
Join me as I collect my share of dining faux pas, stumble across China's premade dish (预制菜) craze, watch street vendors wrestle with ever-shifting regulations, and trace eating habits rooted in Wuhan's long port-city past.
