Today I’m checking on my roses growing outdoors in my handmade cement/hypertufa containers to see how they’re holding up in mid-January. This is the first winter test for both the container-grown roses and the DIY hypertufa planters, and I’m excited to observe how they perform in real winter conditions.
Here in New England, the weather in January and February can be extremely unpredictable — ranging from deep freezes and snow to sudden thaws — so winterizing roses in pots is essential. I’ll be monitoring soil moisture, root protection, and overall plant health to see which winter rose care techniques truly work in a cold climate garden.
If you’re interested in container gardening in winter, overwintering roses, hypertufa planters, or New England gardening, this season offers valuable real-life lessons.
