Understanding the Classroom Culture: Differences from Home Countries to Here
THE NEW SCHOOL | http://www.newschool.edu
Do you have questions about what approaches are the most useful for students from different cultures? Do you find some materials are more effective, depending on a students cultural background? In this engaging panel discussion on classroom culture, students from several countries will explain their own approach toward learning English and the methods or techniques they view as most effective as English students in New York. We'll also look at attitudes regarding autonomy, competition and cooperation in the classroom, and the role of the teacher and the expectations students have of that role.

Dance Performance:
Floating Words describes a particular experience of learning English. It reveals the challenges and the surprises when being exposed to a different culture. This performance captures those experiences and feelings --- the frustration from the inability to communicate needs and experiences fully, the push for persistence, and the awareness that repetition is essential as even the most basic words are unknown. There are words floating on stage as the dancer moves in an attempt to communicate with the audience.
Location: Eugene Lang Building, Wollman Hall.
