That is a very interesting and true fact!
Although polar bears' fur appears white (helping them camouflage themselves in the snow), the actual skin of polar bears under their thick fur is black.
🖤 Why is polar bear skin black?
This black skin color is a crucial adaptation for survival in the extremely cold Arctic environment:
Heat Absorption (Solar Collector): Black is the most effective color for absorbing solar radiation. The black skin of polar bears functions like a “solar panel,” attracting and absorbing heat from incoming sunlight, helping to keep their body temperature warm.
UV Protection: This black fur also contains high levels of melanin pigment, which provides additional protection against the intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the Arctic environment.
🔬 The Secret of Their Fur
Interestingly, polar bear fur itself is not white, but transparent and hollow. The white visual effect we see is caused by:
Optical Illusion: The hollow structure of each strand of fur reflects and scatters visible light, making them appear white to our eyes—a perfect camouflage.
Heat Conduction: These transparent hairs also help conduct sunlight to the black skin beneath, allowing maximum heat absorption.
So, polar bears have a clever strategy: black skin to absorb heat, and transparent hairs that appear white for camouflage!
