Are you an international student? Are you pursuing further studies in the UK? Do you want to qualify as a barrister in England and Wales? If yes, this episode was made specifically for you!
Mequissa Baptiste and I place a special focus on the requirements that must be fulfilled when attaining a visa for pupillage. Mequissa spends some time discussing the Skilled Worker Visa and the innate costs of applying for the visa. We highlight the challenges that international students face when considering applying for pupillage by dissecting the requirements. For example: Did you know that your earnings from your pupillage offer must meet the threshold stipulated by the visa requirements i.e. earnings of at least £20,720? Did you know that if you are considering applying for tenancy after pupillage you must ensure that you are earning £29,600 to fulfil the visa requirements? These figures are subject to change.
Our candid discussion also reveals that there are a few Sets or Chambers which do not accept international applicants. Before applying to them for pupillage, thorough research should be undertaken.
We also speak about the fact that some university based policies (like the No Detriment Policy) impact international students differently in comparison to UK-domiciled students.
We conclude the episode by inviting international students to join the support group ‘Internationals and the English Bar’ to gain assistance from others who are going through the process and those who have been through the process. For further information contact Mequissa Baptiste or Nadia Bari.
