If you work public transit, especially night routes through old downtown districts, listen carefully. Some passengers have been riding the same route for decades. And they'll do anything to make sure you understand they're still here.

Three months ago, I took the graveyard shift on Route 47. 10 PM to 6 AM through the part of the city that emptied out after dark. My predecessor left a notebook with seven rules I thought were a joke—until a man paid his fare with coins from 1957, and when I checked my mirror, his seat was empty.

Now I understand why the previous driver retired. Some passengers aren't trying to get somewhere. They're trying to get home to places that don't exist anymore. And once you accept their fares, you become part of the route they can never finish.

THE SEVEN RULES:

Rule 1: Never skip a stop. Someone's always waiting.

Rule 5: If you hear singing from the back, don't turn around.
Rule 6: Between 2-3 AM, don't make eye contact in your mirror.
Rule 7: If someone requests a stop not on your route, keep driving.
