Part 1: Here is the beginning of a live performance with mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade singing "Poème de l'amour et de la mer" by Ernest Chausson. Riccardo Muti conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra in this 131st anniversary concert, 23 January 1988. The text is by Chausson's friend Maurice Bouchor. A brief synopsis of these first two movements: The poet spends his summer at the coast and meets a girl on the shore. She leaves before him and he wonders if they'll ever meet again. The melancholic orchestral interlude foreshadows his disappointment.
