First info about post-Matterhorn core for 2022. Codenamed Makalu.
First performance targets for Matterhorn and Makalu core families.
Matterhorn in 2021 will have +25% IPC (X2 smart phone core) over Zen3 (beating also Zen 4)
Makalu in 2022 will have +62% IPC (V2 server core) over Zen 3
Makalu has no 32-bit backward compatibility! Every single transistor is aimed to deliver maximum performance in 64-bit. Compare that to x86 which needs to maintain compatibility for 32-bit mode and 16-bit mode who nobody use that anymore.
And remember. Last time when ARM promised +15% IPC uplift for A78 gen they delivered +30% IPC uplift (X1 core). Massive over delivery. In server derivative core last time ARM promised +30% IPC uplift from N1 Neoverse core (derived from A76) they delivered +50% IPC in V1 core (X1 derivative).
AMD should drop Zen3 prices significantly and prey for customer loyalty to stay with them during upcoming dark period. x86 is clearly going to die soon and anybody who stays on board this sinking ship too long will go down with it. It's amazing that Jim Keller knew that 5 years ahead of anybody when he pushed for AMD ARM K12 development. Now we can see how great visioner Jim Keller is.
Everybody who remember time when Jim Keller left AMD was asking why after such a great Zen uarch he pushed ARM K12 CPU and why he left because of it. Now it's clear he was right in every single word he said. And Lisa Su, the ex-IBM manager she has no clue about CPU design, forced Jim out of AMD after he saved AMD with Zen1 and enjoying all the success. Not only enjoying success but also spreading lies about Jim Keller that he was just a manager, he was not involved in Zen design and all the job did Michael Clark. Yeah sure, the same AMD guys who developed terrible Bulldozer suddenly turned into geniuses and developed Zen 4xALU uarch which is very similar to Apple A7 Cyclone 4xALU CPU (identical is also Reorder Buffer size 192-entry). There was only one guy who knew about A7 uarch back in 2012 (A7 was released in 2013 at market) and the guy was Jim Keller who came to AMD from Apple's CPU design team.
AMD's CEO Lisa Su is evil person driving AMD into big trouble again. And she has no clue about that. Otherwise she would never raised Zen3 price. Especially when Zen3 server CPU prices will go down significantly to fight ARM server CPUs.
