Dual-tasking in the context of exercise for individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) involves incorporating cognitive tasks alongside physical activities. This approach is beneficial for several reasons:
Cognitive Stimulation: Dual-tasking engages both the body and the mind simultaneously. This cognitive stimulation is crucial for individuals with mild cognitive impairment as it helps to maintain and potentially improve cognitive functions.
Functional Relevance: Many daily activities require both physical and cognitive effort. By incorporating dual-task exercises, individuals with MCI can practice and enhance their ability to perform everyday tasks that involve multitasking.
Enhanced Brain Plasticity: Engaging in dual-task exercises may promote neuroplasticity, which refers to the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. This can be particularly important for individuals with MCI, as it may support the brain's adaptive response to cognitive challenges.
Improved Attention and Focus: Dual-task exercises require individuals to split their attention between physical movements and cognitive tasks, which can help improve attention and focus. This can be especially beneficial for those experiencing difficulties in sustaining attention due to mild cognitive impairment.
CEP Community Live is a supportive space that offers weekly informative videos and discussions for those with early-stage memory loss, also known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI), their care partners and families, and clinicians.
MCI is a condition characterized by a noticeable decline in memory and cognitive abilities that is greater than what would be considered normal for a person's age but not severe enough to interfere significantly with daily life activities. It is a transitional stage between normal age-related cognitive changes and more serious cognitive impairment, such as dementia.
CEP Community Live is supported by the Harriet and Charlie Shaffer Cognitive Empowerment Program. Through a unique research partnership with Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Cognitive Empowerment program is a research program designed to co-create a sustainable learning community that promotes joy, purpose, brain health, and wellness through innovation and personalized lifestyle programs, technologies, and physical environments.
Our vision is to empower people facing memory loss and cognitive changes by creating an evidence-based model for lifestyle interventions that can be replicated nationally and internationally.
Our programming includes cognitive training, physical training, nutrition, support groups, and a host of other topics to increase their sense of empowerment and community and hopefully decrease their symptoms.
