The Vermont Department of Health urges people considering travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj or Umrah to make sure they are current on their meningococcal vaccine—and other routine and travel-related vaccines—before they travel.
In recent years, people have gotten meningococcal disease while traveling to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for Umrah. Meningococcal disease is caused by bacteria that can make people very sick. It is spread through close or lengthy contact with other people. Vaccines offer the best protection against meningococcal disease.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia requires all travelers aged one year and older arriving for Hajj or Umrah to show proof they have gotten a meningococcal vaccine in the last 3-5 years (depending on vaccine type) and at least 10 days before their travel date.
If you plan to travel:
1. Talk to your doctor about whether you or your family need vaccines to meet travel health requirements, including meningococcal vaccines.
Make an appointment to get vaccinated if needed. If you do not have a doctor or health insurance, please call your local health office (English).
2. Find a travel clinic in Vermont by calling 2-1-1 or visiting the CDC Traveler’s Health website.
3. Seek medical care right away if you develop fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, or vomiting during or after travel.
For more information on Hajj health requirements, visit the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s website in English with translation options available on the webpage.
