The Athenæum’s Music Committee is pleased to bring you this showcase of three outstanding young musicians by the Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT). Past YCAT artists include tenor Ian Bostridge, trumpeter Alison Balsom, conductor Charles Hazlewood and many musicians who have performed at the Athenaeum, including the Belcea Quartet and new Member Alasdair Tait, YCAT’s CEO and Artistic Director, who introduces this 30-minute taster of talent.
These three young artists bring amazing life to their instruments in this spectacular showcase. Tabea Debus on recorder has been described by The Times as a ‘charismatic virtuoso’ and Classic FM called her ‘one of the most exciting young musicians in the early music world.’ Award winner Samuele Telari on accordion has been described as an ‘artist whose overwhelming musicality goes beyond his instrument’. Critically acclaimed pianist Giuseppe Guarrera won Second Prize at the Montréal International Competition and has been described as an ‘extraordinary young talent’ with a ‘breathtakingly differentiated technique.’
With a 35-year record of success, YCAT is a specialist UK charity that supports young classical musicians through the early stages of their careers. For a young musician to be selected and supported by YCAT is seen as one of the most important international benchmarks for early career development. The heart of their mission is securing performance opportunities in the UK, and its recognised ‘badge of excellence’ helps its artists perform worldwide.
Unlike talks at the Athenaeum, the concerts create a cost for the Club as musicians must be paid a fee, or in this case a promised donation to YCAT to be distributed to the artists involved. Since the Club cannot recoup that cost through 'ticket' prices as it normally would, we ask Members who are able to do so to consider kindly making a donation of perhaps £10 that will be pooled to cover the donation to YCAT. You can do so by emailing Christina in the Club and asking for your donation to be charged to your account or by posting a cheque to the Club.
Christina has also sent on 18th May a programme with more details of the music, musicians and YCAT.
We would like to thank past Music Committee member Dame Janet Ritterman for making the arrangements to bring this showcase to you.
Member Alasdair Tait, the CEO and Artistic Director of YCAT, will introduce the showcase at the start of the video (you may need to turn up the volume on your device for that section.)
