OKLAHOMA CITY - Political protesters gathered at the Capitol Friday to interrupt an event intended to help Muslim Oklahomans learn more about their state government.
2 Works for You anchor Steven Romo traveled to Oklahoma City to talk with protesters and those attending Muslim Day.
Some protesters claim they simply gathered to exercise their rights.
"If you don't like our laws go back to where you came from where you already practice your laws,” said protester Larry Wooten.
Wooten said he’s concerned about Shira Law in the US.
Muslim Day organizer Adam Soltani says the purpose was to get his community more involved in Oklahoma's democratic process.
"[It was a] chance for them to learn from their lawmakers and community leaders and hopefully the lawmakers learned a thing or two from them."
Not all protestors were against Muslim Day, some said they respect the rights of Muslims to practice their religion. Most protesters passed out flowers or kept their identities hidden behind masks.
Security for the event was elevated more than usual, but things stayed relatively peaceful.
“Muslims are part of this country, we contribute and we bring value to America and Oklahoma. And we want people to recognize that as well,” said Soltani.
State Representatives John Bennett and Dan Fisher released statements questioning the motives of Cair and Muslim Day. Cair organizers say they hope this is the first Muslim day of many.
