U.S. makes investment in new HIV prevention drug

Описание: The U.S. announced Thursday it's helping to procure a new HIV prevention drug — and to give it to as many as 2 million people in lower-income countries over the next three years. The drug, called lenacapavir, has been hailed as a game-changer.

Clinical trials showed just two injections a year provide almost complete protection against contracting HIV. The U.S. says it’s going to work with the drug maker, Gilead Sciences, and the Global Fund, the international financing organization, to get lenacapavir to the countries hardest hit by HIV. The Trump administration says the approach of buying commodities and focusing on medical breakthroughs will be the model for its global health work in the future.
