Life Is In The Blood is a song that reflects on the role and importance of the umbilical cord during birth.

I learned about delayed cord clamping years after my children were born. There was some regret—but also deep gratitude for the awareness I have now.

At birth, a significant portion of a baby’s blood volume remains in the placenta and umbilical cord. Research shows that delaying cord clamping for a short time allows more of that blood to transfer to the newborn and is associated with higher iron stores in infancy. Early cord clamping, in contrast, has been linked in some studies to lower iron levels in certain babies.

The umbilical cord and cord blood have been studied for many years and are known to contain stem cells and other components that are used in medical research and treatments, typically within established ethical and consent-based frameworks. There is a wide range of publicly available medical information for those who wish to learn more about this area.

I pray that we can make better, more informed choices as this wisdom—once widely understood—comes back into view.
