Roosevelt elk are native to the whole Pacific Northwest coast, and one of the best places to see them is here at the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area in Reedsport on the central Oregon Coast. It’s about an hour and a half west of Eugene or about 3 hours and 15 minutes’ drive from Portland.

The elk viewing area is right on highway 38. There’s a pullout with a lot of parking, and a shelter with interpretive signs to help visitors learn about the wildlife. As of 2022, there’s no fee to park at the elk viewing area. Hunting is of course not allowed!

This herd lives in the area year-round since the climate is very mild and there’s a lot of food. In terms of timing, mornings and late afternoons are supposed to be the best bet for elk viewing. I’ve driven by a few times and have usually seen elk in the viewing area. Sometimes they’re pretty far away, and sometimes they’re a lot closer, so I’d recommend bringing binoculars so you’ll be able to see them well either way.

If you enjoy seeing the Roosevelt elk, you may also enjoy visiting the sea lion caves just up the coast near Florence, OR. It’s another amazing opportunity for wildlife watching in Oregon, because it’s so likely you’ll get to see the wildlife—the sea lions are nearly always in the caves in the winter months.
