Black Lives Matter protesters held a demonstration in Seattle City Hall on Tuesday night, calling for the resignation of Mayor Jenny Durkan and the defunding of Seattle Police Department. The incident occurred on the twelfth consecutive night of protests in the wake of the killing of George Floyd.
Seattle police officers have used tear gas, pepper spray and other less-lethal weapons against crowds marching against racism and police brutality.
Mayor Durkan and Police Chief Carmen Best have apologised to peaceful protesters who subjected to chemical weapons. On Friday, the city announced a 30-day ban on the use of tear gas, but police forces continued to use blast balls and pepper spray to disperse protesters over the weekend.
Protesters have now set up a barricaded zone around a police precinct building, declaring an “autonomous zone” after police retreated from the Capitol Hill area, a frequent flashpoint between demonstrators and police forces.
