Alfred Hitchcock had wanted to adapt a French novel called Celle qui n'était plus ('She Was No More') but somebody else got there first - on film it became Clouzot's classic Les Diaboliques. Turning to the other work by authors Boileau and Narcejac he chose The Living and the Dead, a thriller of obsession and murder that became his classic Vertigo.
Fans of Vertigo will still find the story quite recognisable in this adaptation of the novel, albeit it's set in gloomier times and places (France in the post-war years), and the ending differs a little - though once you've heard it you might find it interesting to wonder just how close Jimmy Stewart's obsessive protagonist comes to the same finale as his book counterpart...
