One of the most original songs from this era, "Oh Industry" is a song Bette Midler's character from "Beaches" performs with an off-Broadway troupe. The song can best be described as industrial avant-garde with evocative lyrics about pollution and destruction from industrialization. While the song in the film is presented as a pedantic piece of experimental performance art, it is one of the most memorable moments in the film. For Megan, Kagan, and our friend Chris Doucet, the dark originality of this song made it stand out as an under-appreciated masterpiece.

Instead of choosing to cover this song by adding lots of our own unique interpretations, we approached this with the goal of producing something with high fidelity and and reverence to the original. Singing this song since childhood, Megan was intimately familiar with Midler's original performance and reproduced many of the iconic moments in the vocal. Kagan dictated as directly as possible the harmonic content of the song to arrange and produce the live strings, including the incredible double stop passages played on electric violin. However, the biggest "labor of love" on this production was definitely by composer Christopher Doucet who delved into music history to produce both the percussion and guitar parts for this cover. He used a huge arsenal of period appropriate guitars, amps, and drum machines to recreate the iconic late 80's sound that creates the sonic fingerprint of "Oh Industry".
