Farm Raised Beef Price vs Grocery Store

That is not new news by any means, however, as grocery store prices rise and with the availability of social media, some stories are not being told straight.

One example is "beef is cheaper if bought locally" and that is being put to the test today. Ryan Buschman with Anchor V Ranch kindly opened his freezer door to host Emma Coffman and not only weighed every pound of beef from a heifer he raised himself, but also opened his invoice sheets to show what the cost is to take a beef animal to the butcher and got it processed.

We estimated that this heifer yielded 63.5% and would grade high choice.
Ryan credits his high quality carcass data and high performing calves to his genetics through RA Brown located in Throckmorton Texas.

We want to emphasize that shopping local and developing relationships with farmers and rancher is ENCOURAGED!!! However, this may not be a feasible option for consumers either due to location or pricing. Local beef SHOULD be priced higher as there is a lot more input costs and overhead to process a smaller number of animals compared to the commercial production. But please remember, that if you shop at a grocery store your beef is safe and high quality as well. The USDA has standards of beef grades and many local producers, such as Ryan, also sell their homegrown cattle to the commercial industry (also known at the "packers" or "big four").
