5 Tips for Protecting Your Home From Foreclosure

Are you facing foreclosure? Need to know where to start in order to protect your home? Let's take a look at five suggestions to help you protect your home.

I'm Jim Keaveney with Keaveney Legal Group. We are a New Jersey and Pennsylvania based law firm that focuses on foreclosure defense and helping those facing difficult times to stay in their homes. Whenever someone asks me, "Jim, what should I do to protect my home from foreclosure?", I recommend the following:

Understand your options when facing foreclosure in order to find the best option for your situation. While many people try to fight a foreclosure on their own, they often miss chances to raise defenses that could save their homes and fail to take advantage of programs implemented by the government to help people stay in their homes. An attorney will give you options, protect your rights, and fight to keep you from losing your home.

Third, thoroughly examine alternatives to foreclosure. With options like selling the home, short sales, buy back programs, refinancing, and interest and principal reduction programs, there are more alternatives to foreclosure today than ever before. As a result, it does not make sense to simply roll over and let a bank foreclose when you can take advantage of an alternative and avoid the time and expense of a foreclosure while helping to protect and improve your own credit score.

Also, be sure to keep all notices and documents you've received. Often, homeowners will shut down when they see something related to a foreclosure and simply stop opening mail, or worse, start tossing it in the trash. Whether sent to you by the bank, an attorney for the bank, the court, or someone else, you should hold onto every document you receive related to the foreclosure. Often, these documents will be useful for fighting the foreclosure, provide information about alternative programs, and will let you know about deadlines you will need to observe.

The final tip I want to leave you with today is to get all of your loan and foreclosure paperwork looked at by an attorney. Historically, when one faced foreclosure that was the end of the story, the person had very few options, and the house would be lost. Today, though, there are so many options and ways to fight that there is no reason anyone should just lose their home without trying. Get your paperwork looked at to see if you can take advantage of government sponsored programs, or have errors in your loan which can help us fight the foreclosure case. We find errors all of the time, and have helped scores of people fight their foreclosures and save their homes.
