Just type the words ‘Gender Discrimination’ in google and you will find almost all the search results are about female inequality, meaning that it is a general belief that men are not and can not be discriminated against. Also, how many of you have heard the term, Misogyny, I know the answer would be very few but, now compare it with the term, Misandry, the numbers go even lower. In fact, I came to know about this term very recently, when I was researching for this video. Hence, you can understand, how granted the world takes, the problems and issues such as inequality faced by men. Misandry is the unnoticed problem which many men around is facing because of the widespread belief that it is ONLY the females that are being discriminated against, without recognising and acknowledging that even males are experiencing discrimination and inequality in all spheres of life.
Our comparison is not with women here, but with timelines between pre-modern and modern world. Modern world has created conditions, situations, institutions, laws and structure, that has made gender discrimination very complex, meaning that the concept of male inequality has also arisen. Until now, gender inequality was mostly uni-directional. But, now, we need to understand and acknowledge that even men are discriminated against.
There are multiple reasons that has made gender inequality very complex. One of them is lack of gender neutral laws. Even governmental policies are designed in the same manner. Social conditioning, gender stereotypes and bias related to gender bias adds to the pressure faced by men.
It is true that men and boys, on average, have more privileges and benefits than women and girls; however, in many cases, it is possible that the costs of masculinity exceed its benefits and privileges. It is important to examine these costs of masculine and patriarchal norms, not only on girls and women, but also on young boys and men. This was depicted very clearly by Norah Vincent, a journalist, who in her book, Self-made man, talks about her 18 months of experience, where she experienced life as a disguised man. Ironically, Vincent said, it took experiencing life as a man for her to appreciate being a woman. "I really like being a woman. ... I like it more now because I think it's more of a privilege." Ms. Vincent died on July 6 at a clinic in Switzerland and her death was medically assisted.
It is a tight rope that the country is walking on where the crime against women is very high and the crime committed or misuse of the laws by women is also on the rise, a balance has to be reached to ensure that equality is not jostled. The society, government and the law should change and provide equal stance and opportunities to both the genders and no assumptions or judgements should be made without proof. Like women want men to give them support while fighting for equal rights, they should support men for their equal responsibility fight.Individuals should bring light to the issue, by ending the silence and urge men to share their issues.
